Driving, stopping, driving, stopping

On Sunday June 2 we left on the next stage of our trip, first stop at South Lake Tahoe and dogs had a dip at the dog friendly beach, yes Darwin and Roo were sharing the adventure. Luckily there are dog friendly motels and cafes.

Lake Tahoe (/ˈtɑːh/; Washo: dáʔaw) is a large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada of the United States. At a surface elevation of 6,225 ft (1,897 m), it is located along the border between California and Nevada, west of Carson City. Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America. Its depth is 1,645 ft (501 m), making it the second-deepest in the United States (the deepest is Crater Lake in Oregon, being 300 ft (91 m) deeper, at 1,945 ft (593 m)).[2] Additionally, Lake Tahoe is listed as the 26th largest lake by volume in the world at 122,160,280 acre·ft (150.68249 km3).
The lake was formed about 2 million years ago and is a part of the Lake Tahoe Basin with the modern lake being shaped during the ice ages. It is known for the clarity of its water and the panorama of surrounding mountains on all sides. The area surrounding the lake is also referred to as Lake Tahoe, or simply Tahoe.
Lake Tahoe is a major tourist attraction in both Nevada and California. It is home to a number of ski resorts, summer outdoor recreation, and tourist attractions. Snow and skiing are a significant part of the area's economy and reputation.Mountain and lake scenery are attractions throughout the year. The Nevada side also includes large casinos. Highways provide year-round access from Reno, Carson City, and Sacramento. (Thanks Wikipedia)

Some of the higher peaks still have snow.

Drove through the city and noted the state line between California and Nevada and the immediate siting of many casinos.

Nevada is the outback, long stretches of very little and you wonder how the early white settlers made their slow way across this mostly waterless and very hilly terrain.

Stayed the night in Fallon, Rob beat us at two games of bowling, the alley was next to the motel and we had a late dinner and a minor flutter on the pokies at Stockmans.

Next day, more long drives, detoured to the Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park, Nevada, absolutely the best ranger showed us around the old stamp mill and dinosaur site, there was a self-guided walk through the remains of Berlin.

Down on the left of this page is a link to Coz's pics, where you will find her great shots of the trip.

A family of deer on the road from the State Park.

We made it safely though the extraterrestrial highway and  alien country -or did we?-.

Not sure where this was but typical of the roads on much of the drive.

Stayed the night in St George Utah,

and next day visited the Zion National Park, shuttle buses take tourists to the park but as we had the dogs we drove ourselves around where we could, spectacular rocks..

Lunch in Kanab.

On to the north rim of the Grand Canyon back in Arizona.

This night we stayed at Jacobs Inn.

At Lees Ferry I put a foot in the Colorado river, this is the setting off point for the adventurists who raft down the river, that foot there is the closest I will ever be but Coz and Rob were eyeing those rafts longingly and would love to do the trip again.

And so we arrived back in Flagstaff, end of that part of journey.
