Driving on the wrong side of de road

I have just come back from a drive so thought I would comment on that today.

When I first landed in LA the whole traffic thing freaked me out, as a passenger it seemed that everyone was on the wrong side and turning at intersections made me want to shut my eyes. Also of course with the steering wheel on the 'wrong' side, one keeps wanting to get in the driver's side.

After more than 40 yrs of driving one is programmed to see things one way and anything different makes you want to hit the brakes hard. After the nearly two weeks of road trip the mind was adjusting and it all seemed normal-almost.

Then it was my turn to drive, ok.

  1. Remember to get in the driver's side.
  2. Remember the little mantra - 'Light switch on the Left'
  3. Forget No 2 and turn on the windscreen wipers.
  4. The gears and the park brake are on the right.
  5. Forget No 4 and hit hand on door (much harder in manual according to Coz)
  6. Just remember, as at home, the steering wheel follows the middle line.
  7. Do not EVER forget that one.
  8. In traffic lanes -stick to the right hand lane and overtake by going left, they call it passing here.
  9. In this State it is ok to turn right at a red light if safe, no little slip lanes or signs, so if one forgets or is hesitant the cars behind let you know.
  10. There are great extra turning lanes down centre of road, you can turn into those and wait to turn left.
  11. It is wimpy to drive at the speed limit out on the highways, I is wimpy, I is overtaken by everything including other old ladies.
  12. They are rapidly catching onto the revenue raising potential of speed cameras and they are going in everywhere. I is then not so wimpy.
  13. In Arizona it is not necessary to have a front number plate, so being on the look out for wanted vehicles means sneaking up behind them I guess, but it does look odd, all those blank front bumper bars or the wild and wacky ones that some people have.
  14. Just concentrate ALL the time and so far so good!
